Maldives Association of Tourism Industry or MATI may sound familiar but do you really know who they are and what their responsibilities are? I have heard of MATI for sometime now, just because I work in the industry and I get to see some random memos on letterheads with MATI printed.
The other day I was reading a blog post about MATI and a fellow reader asked the same question as me – Who is MATI? I tried to find a website but I couldn’t find one? Is there anyone who could help me to get more information about MATI as to what it is and how it operates or its legal weight as a NGO, a Trade Body or a Limited Company without share capital.
It will be interesting to know more information about MATI and its Objectives and Article of Association – to guarantee its role in the Tourism Industry of Maldives.
Re: Who is MATI? I guess MATI is Koli MU Maniku. Others tell me MU is MATI. Compose it either way, you are nearly there.
Many tell me it is an underworld organisation but try not to assume so. Why would it be one?
I have not known if they have a website or any of what you are questioning. In the absence of such proof or direction, your best bet is to follow MU and businesses like his and there you have MATI. Again you won’t be mistaken to compose it in reverse order.

Yes, we do hear about MATI a lot. But did you check with Home Ministry with the legal status MATI? Even I have searched Google if MATI have a website or not, but I couldn’t find such a website.

MATI is just another NGO registered with Home Ministry whose memebers are owners of resorts and hotels in maldives and their aim is to market maldives across the globe and also its like any other organisation to discuss and find ways to solve the problems faced by people in the maldivian hotel industry.
MATI is a terrorist organisation formed by Koli Muhammad Umar Manik, Champa Afeef and a few other lords of the tourism to terrorize the Maldivian people and to terrorize the workers in tourism industry. They also terrorize the Maldivian government as seen from the recent episode at Reethi Rah when Home Minister Qasim was so afraid of a character called Moho that he sent star force to control a strike there. Anni is also afraid of them and he is trying to increase period of resort lease to 50 years for them. In the past this group showered Gayoom with praise and in return they received resorts without bidding or were able to renew lease without opening it to bidding. MATI’s day-to-day affairs are run by its Secretary General Sim Ibrahim Mohamed, who also runs many personal investments for MU Manik, such as the FM station FarAway FM. They don’t acknowledge that workers in the industry are humans. They want to treat them like slaves. Many people running MATI backed Dr Hassan Saeed during the past election. The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) is a non-governmental, nonprofit
organization formed in 1982, for the purpose of promoting tourism in the
Maldives. Its membership comprises of Maldives companies and individuals engaged
in travel and tourism related activities; local and foreign travel agents; tour
operators, dive bases, suppliers, airlines, banks and financial institution.
The central role of MATI is to assist its members in addressing the problems and
issues as may arise in the tourism industry of the Maldives. It co-ordinates its
activities in line with Maldivian government policies, and collaborates with other
organizations, nationally and internationally, to render its members the necessary
services.
