This could be rather controversial compared to my previous posts but I thought of sharing my view on the hot topic “Solar Eclipse 2010”. Why I say controversial; because this could somehow be connected to the belief system in our society. Recently I witnessed some comical articles on local media regarding this Natural Phenomenon.
According to the writings in Wikipedia “The eclipse starts at Uganda, passes through Nairobi, enters Indian ocean where the greatest eclipse is taking place in mid of Ocean for a maximum of 11 Mins and 7.7 seconds.
After that enters Maldives, where it would be the longest on land with 10.8 Min of viewing. This makes the tiny islands of Maldives the best spot for viewing this eclipse from land. The annular Eclipse at Male’, the capital city of Maldives starts at 12:20:20 hrs and ends 12:30:06 hrs Maldives local time (GMT+5hrs). This is also the longest duration of any city having an international airport in the eclipse track.”
This is amazing stuff for me as a marketer and a Tourism enthusiast, but sadly I don’t think we have done enough to take advantage of this gift of GOD, though we claim we are the Sunny Side of Life! I am sure on private business levels, some Hotels and Resorts are trying to bundle this and promote to their in-house guests. At the same time I hear grievance from the industry about the lack of synergy between the related Authorities and the business community on ways and means of capitalizing through this gift of GOD!
“We as a prime Tourism Destination and a 100% Muslim Country could have promoted this as “I’tikaf Retreat” to get the best out of this Natural Event”.
Now, here is a prime example to the entire Tourism Industry on this hot topic: Solar eclipse 2010 Exclusive live webcast via CNN from the Maldives!
I so agree…!!!
How long have we known that Maldives is the best place to see the eclipse but why arent there any hoo-hoo haa-haa about this? Shame Shame…
Well done man.
Nabeel, my friend. If every Maldivian guy/gal thought as strategically as you did here; there could have been a live feed from every resort in the Maldives to a different TV channel around the world.
Thank you so much for this bit of service to your nation.
Here is the difference one ( Maldivian ) man in the tourism marketing makes to the country.
Does Maldivian tourism minister understand how the shortage of Maldivians in resort marketing hurt to our destination/country?
Tourism Ministry is busy with selling our islands for 50 years so that our grand children become beggers to tourism tycoons.
MTPB is in a permanent sleep.
Tourism tyrants/business men are busy with selling our islands to foreigners and changing their life to Europe.
Maldvian people are being waiters serving sub-servant to foreign managers and to resort companies for little money.
If at all the people realize /when we realize there will be only one way out.
Destroy this tyrant tourism system and take our islands to ourselves. Costs will be high but; we will do it!
gr8, i loved it.

And what is the rest of the idiots are doing? And what is the President H.E Nasheed doing, to get rid of these idiots not implementing his policies? God Bless The Maldives, God Bless the President!
