Last year Maldives registered a 601.923 tourist arrivals accordingly to tourism ministry. This is a 52.3% increase when compared to that of 2005. The highest number of tourists arrived from Italy which counts to 118,929, and the second being UK followed by Germany and France.In December 2006 alone the Maldives registered 58,621 arrivals, out which 12,294 tourists arrived from Italy. This is 21% of the total arrivals registered for December 2006. UK followed Germany and registered 9,449 tourist arrival to the Maldives.
Total number of beds registered for 2006 counts to 18,407 out of which only 16,155 beds were open for sales which amount to a total occupancy of 81.8% for the whole year. In 2006 tourists spent an average of 8 nights in the Maldives.
