Friends with benefits

nabeel.jpgSo you are on Twitter and Facebook? Me too! I take both Twitter and Facebook very serious. On Twitter I follow people who I really know and who I really want to know. On Facebook I only accept friend requests from people who I really know.

I don’t send random friend requests to people just because their display picture looks nice. I am not a type of person who will just “Confirm” you as a friend because I will look like a rude bastard if I click “Ignore” to your request. I will ignore your request because I have a much deeper meaning to friendship or relationship than having you on a list and not know who you really are.

I love having friends and I know how important it is to have friends. In fact my job is to know people and build long lasting relationships with them. Those who know me can tell that I am a pretty good friend and so are they. For we care for each other and help each other where and when possible.

These days you see a lot of individuals on social networks trying to be your friends and so on. You also see a lot of companies and businesses on these networks trying to take their fair share of this huge exposure. But I see only few businesses (from Maldives) really connecting with their fans or friends following them. Similarly, I see only few of the friends, fans or followers really communicate with the companies or businesses they are friends with, are fans of or are following.

Just like becoming a friend with someone who you really don’t know, there is no point of having thousands of friends, fans or followers if you really can’t interact with them. I know some people will say, you muppet we do it for exposure. So what, can you bank your exposure? No you can’t! Here is exactly my point: if you can’t make a real sale out of it don’t waste your time and energy on it. Do something that can and will bring some revenue to your business.

Remember, exposure without a sale is just worthless. Start thinking now on ways to make a real benefit out of your customers, friends, fans or followers so they will become your real Friends with benefits.

    Hello nabeel,

For some reason, I’ve never been really attracted to social networking platforms.

I do have Facebook, Twitter, Orkut and several other online identities, but to be honest, I’m just not so convinced about its utility as a ‘friend maker’ or ‘networker’.

Twitter does act as a rather efficient live news feed from troubled parts (Mumbai attacks, Iran protests) but seriously. Who cares if you’re wearing a red shirt?

I never got that aspect of it.

As for facebook, I do use it intermittently in case i need to throw some links arounrd ;-)

But on the whole, they’re both a colossal waste of time.
